Afghanistan – Death of a French soldier
Paris, February 20, 2011
President Sarkozy was very shocked to learn of the death of a 1st-Class chasseur from the Bourg-Saint-Maurice 7th Chasseurs Alpins [mountain light infantry] battalion in Afghanistan early on Saturday evening.
Following an operation in the Alasay Valley, the column was attacked by insurgents near Landarkhel and its armoured vehicle was hit by fire from an anti-tank weapon.
A lance-corporal from the army’s Suippes 132nd Dog Battalion, on board the same vehicle, was seriously wounded in the attack. A corporal from the 7th Chasseurs Alpins battalion was less seriously hurt.
President Sarkozy expresses his most sincere condolences to the family and close friends of the soldier killed in action and shares their grief.
He wishes the wounded soldiers the speediest possible recovery and assures them and their families of his full sympathy in this painful ordeal.
The Head of State reaffirms his support for the Afghan people and authorities. He expresses France’s determination to continue working within the International Security Assistance Force. This UN-mandated force has been assigned the mission of contributing to the re-establishment of stability, restoration of peace and to development in Afghanistan./.
