Pakistan – Assassination of the Minister for Minorities

Statement made by Alain Juppé, Ministre d’Etat, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs

Paris, March 2, 2011

The French government expresses its horror and outrage following the assassination of the Pakistani Minorities Minister, Shahbaz Bhatti.

France utterly condemns this appalling crime. Everything must be done to ensure the perpetrators of this murder are identified and punished.

This assassination – the second of a leading Pakistani politician in two months – comes amid a worrying climate of attacks on freedom of expression and religious freedom in Pakistan.

Nobody can accept the killing of a human being for who he is or what he believes.

France pays tribute to the memory of this political leader, who for many years was very bravely committed to defending the rights of minorities, and more generally human rights.

France – who received Shahbaz Bhatti at the invitation of the Minister of Foreign and European Affairs – offers her condolences to his family members and close friends.

She reaffirms, more than ever, her support for the Pakistani authorities and encourages them not to give in to extremism but to continue their fight against terrorism and all forms of violence detrimental to individual freedoms./.
