Letter from Nicolas Sarkozy, President of the Republic, to Ban Ki-moon, United Nations Secretary-General

Paris, April 4, 2011

Dear Secretary-General,

You wrote to me on 3 April 2011 to request of me the French forces’ support for the military operations to be conducted by the United Nations Operation in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI), in accordance with UNSCR 1975, to neutralize the heavy weapons used against the civilian population and the Blue Helmets.

I can confirm to you that I have given authorization to the French forces – as you requested of me and in line with the mandate they received from the Security Council – to carry out these operations jointly with UNOCI.

Like you, I believe it is an urgent necessity to protect the civilians under threat in Côte d’Ivoire, in parallel with the whole international community’s political efforts to resolve the present crisis while respecting the Ivorian people’s sovereign choice.

(complimentary close)./.
