Meeting between François Fillon, Prime Minister, and Yusuf Raza Gilani, Prime Minister of Pakistan – Communiqué issued by the French Prime Minister

Paris, May 5, 2011

Prime Minister François Fillon met Yusuf Raza Gilani, Prime Minister of Pakistan, at the Hôtel de Matignon on Thursday, 5 May for a meeting and a working dinner.

The meeting led to the signature of three joint declarations on political issues, security cooperation and the development of economic and trade relations between France and Pakistan.

It was an opportunity for the Prime Minister to tell Mr Gilani of France’s wish to help Pakistan – which has returned to democracy since 2008 – to tackle the major challenges she must face, whether it be in the field of combating intolerance, extremism and terrorism, that of financing and building infrastructures for the benefit of the population, or that of economic development.

With regard to the death of Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan, François Fillon stressed to his counterpart the need to make it clear that the battle being fought by Pakistan –who is still suffering very badly from terrorist violence – targets all forms of terrorism without distinction. In this context, he emphasized the advantages of closer cooperation between our two countries, as envisaged in the joint Franco-Pakistani declaration on security.

The Prime Minister recalled the support provided by France, since the Donors’ Conference in Tokyo in April 2009, to Pakistani development projects, particularly in the areas of water and energy. The two prime ministers discussed different ways to increase trade and investment between our two countries and thus contribute to the growth of the economy and employment in Pakistan.

Finally, the two heads of government spoke about the situation in the region, in particular the process of stabilization, reconciliation and consolidation of the democratic institutions in Afghanistan./.
