President Sarkozy has noted the resignation – which had become inevitable – of M. Dominique Strauss-Kahn from his post as Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund.
President Sarkozy offers his full support to the International Monetary Fund, which – under the authority of its Managing Director – has contributed, at a particularly difficult time, to safeguarding global financial stability and the resumption of economic growth.
President Sarkozy hopes that the International Monetary Fund’s next managing director will be chosen by its Executive Board following an open and transparent process.
The European Union – whose Member States are collectively the main shareholder in the Fund – is in a position to present a very high-quality candidate. Europe must opt for unity./.
