G8 summit/bilateral meeting between France and Russia
Deauville, May 26, 2011
Ladies and gentlemen, it’s a very great honour and a very great pleasure to receive President Medvedev here in Deauville to launch the G8 summit.
Relations between Russia and France are in good shape. I think I can say there’s great trust between our two countries and our two governments.
We’ve discussed every subject and will have the opportunity to talk about them again in the course of the day, but I want to tell you now that we reached a definitive agreement about the two BPCs [projection and command ships or LHDs] built in France and the two BPCs built in Russia. The different points of the signature and the contract were agreed, so the signature will take place within a fortnight.
I’d like to reiterate my strong belief, France’s strong belief that the Cold War is over, that the Berlin Wall has come down and that we must regard Russia as a friend and think, with her, about establishing a vast area of security and prosperity together.
We talked about all the big international issues. We have similar global outlooks; and on those subjects where there could be differences, we decided to take joint initiatives. We’ll have an opportunity to speak about this in the coming hours and days./.
