Statement by the Foreign and European Affairs Ministry Spokesman

Paris, May 27, 2011

France utterly condemns the attack on the Italian UNIFIL contingent, which injured six people north of Sidon in southern Lebanon. All our thoughts are with the families of the soldiers.

France calls for full light be shed on this attack. In this respect we welcome the Lebanese armed forces’ cooperation with UNIFIL in conducting this inquiry. We urge the Lebanese authorities to do everything to bring those responsible for this crime to justice.

We cannot tolerate such a breach of the safety of military personnel deployed within the framework of a UN peacekeeping operation who are acting in accordance with UNSCRs 1701 and 1937 and at the request of the Lebanese government. We reaffirm that the security and freedom of movement of the UNIFIL soldiers must be guaranteed.

France reaffirms her commitment to the security, stability, independence and sovereignty of Lebanon./.
