Death of a French soldier in Afghanistan

President Sarkozy was very shocked to learn, late this morning, of the death of Corporal Nunes-Patego of the 17th Parachute Engineers Regiment. The corporal was taking part in a reconnaissance operation as part of an operation in the Alasay Valley. He was killed during a firefight with insurgents.

President Sarkozy expresses his most sincere condolences to the bereaved and shares their pain.

The Head of State reaffirms his support for the Afghan people and authorities. He expresses France’s determination to continue working within the International Security Assistance Force. This UN-mandated force has been assigned the mission of contributing to the re-establishment of stability and the restoration of peace, and to development in Afghanistan./.
