The Ministre d’Etat, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, is travelling to London this evening for meetings and a working dinner with his British counterpart, Foreign Secretary William Hague.
The visit, which comes in the context of excellent bilateral relations, will be an opportunity to discuss several current international issues on which we are working closely with the United Kingdom.
The two ministers will discuss Libya and the need to continue moving forward in the operations undertaken, supporting the National Transitional Council and galvanizing our partners with a view to the end of the Gaddafi regime and a democratic transition.
On Syria, the Ministre d’Etat will discuss the importance of maintaining the policy of sanctions against people and entities responsible for the crackdown or linked to it, at a time when the demonstrations are continuing and the economic situation is deteriorating further. He will stress the need to continue the mobilization effort to ensure the United Nations Security Council faces its responsibilities, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon having just condemned, once again, the scale of the crimes committed by the Syrian regime.
Iran, Afghanistan and the Middle East peace process will also be on the agenda.
The Ministre d’Etat will also reaffirm that we need a relaunch of European defence. Also regarding Europe, the two ministers will discuss the forthcoming Financial Perspectives 2014-2020.
Regarding the forthcoming bilateral summit to be held in France before the end of the year, the Ministre d’Etat will reiterate our determination to make it a success, in continuation of the one held in London on 2 November last year./.
