Syria/worsening crackdown in Hama

Statement by Alain Juppé, Ministre d’Etat, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs

Paris, July 31, 2011

France utterly condemns the ongoing crackdown by the Syrian authorities, which is growing even worse.

She expresses her deep concern about the operations carried out by the army today in Hama, Deir ez Zor and Al-Bukamal, which have already reportedly claimed more than 100 lives.

Syria’s political, military and security leaders must be aware – now more than ever – that they will be held accountable for their actions.
The continuation of the crackdown and brutality against the population is particularly unacceptable on the eve of the month of Ramadan and can only lead to still further instability and violence throughout the country.

The Syrian army must be conscious that its main duty is to protect its compatriots and the stability of the country and not impose a reign of terror there.

In these horrifying circumstances, France hopes more than ever that the United Nations Security Council will shoulder its responsibilities by speaking out loud and clear, as the United Nations Secretary-General has done several times./.
