Côte d’Ivoire/renewal of UNOCI’s mandate – Statement by the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs Spokesman

Paris, July 28, 2011

France welcomes the adoption of UNSCR 2000 renewing UNOCI’s mandate for one year.

UNOCI is tasked with helping stabilize Côte d’Ivoire, in support of the Ivorian authorities. The Security Council has given it a specific mandate to participate in the demobilization of former combatants and the restructuring of the security sector, essential conditions for the re-establishment of security in Côte d’Ivoire. The United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative is also tasked with helping the Ivorian authorities organize the next general election and with certifying the result, in accordance with the Ouagadougou Agreement concluded between the Ivorian parties in 2007.

France pays tribute to the work done by Choi Young-jin as the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Côte d’Ivoire in a context of major crisis. She welcomes the appointment of a new Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Côte d’Ivoire, Albert Koenders.

France supports the action of the United Nations Secretary-General’s new Special Representative to help stabilize Côte d’Ivoire. (…)
