Ariane 5 – 45th consecutive successful launch – Communiqué issued by the Ministry for Higher Education and Research

Paris, August 9 , 2011

Laurent Wauquiez, Minister for Higher Education and Research, responsible for the space sector, welcomes the success of the Ariane 5 launch which took place during the night of 6/7 August. The success of this 203rd Ariane mission confirms once again both the European launcher’s exceptional reliability and European industry’s expertise.

Laurent Wauquiez most warmly congratulates the teams of Arianespace, the French National Space Agency (CNES – Centre nationale d’études spatiales), the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European manufacturers who have contributed to the success of the launch of Ariane 5, which guarantees our autonomous access to space.

With this 45th successful launch in a row, Ariane 5 has placed two satellites into orbit, bolstering its position as the only launcher available on the commercial market capable of simultaneously launching two payloads:

- the first ASTRA 1N satellite was built by EADS Astrium for the Luxembourg operator SES ASTRA and will deliver TV services Europe-wide;

- the second BSAT-3c/JCSAT-110R, built by Lockheed Martin Commercial Space Systems, will enable the Japanese operators B-SAT Corporation and SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation to provide TV services throughout the Japanese archipelago.

The Minister drew attention to the boost which will be given to the French space industry’s technological excellence as a result of the €500 million specifically allocated to space in the [state’s] forward-looking investment programme and thanks to the financing of the Toulouse and Nantes technological research institutes, dedicated, respectively, to the aerospace industry and composite materials./.
