Communiqué issued by the Presidency of the Republic

Paris, August 14, 2011

President Sarkozy was extremely sad to learn of the death this morning in Afghanistan of a lieutenant from the Colmar 152nd Infantry Regiment. During a mission to support the Afghan national army, in Kapisa, he was shot by an insurgent and mortally wounded.

President Sarkozy expresses his most sincere condolences to the bereaved and shares their pain.

These recent operations, although bloody, do not weaken France’s resolve. They reflect the intensity of the insurgents’ desperate fighting. The Head of State once again expresses France’s determination to continue working within the International Security Assistance Force to restore peace and re-establish stability in that country and contribute to its development./.
