France deplores the execution on September 21, 2011, in the state of Georgia of Mr. Troy Davis, following the refusal by the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles on Monday to commute his sentence.
We strongly deplore the fact that the numerous appeals for clemency were not heeded.
France reaffirms its opposition to the death penalty anywhere, whatever the circumstances. It reaffirms that any miscarriage of justice in its use is irreversible.
While more than two thirds of States around the world have abolished this punishment, in law or in fact, this case demonstrates the need to continue efforts to achieve the universal and definitive abolition of the death penalty.
