Statement by the Foreign and European Affairs Ministry Spokesman

Paris, October 12, 2011

France utterly condemns the attack against an African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) patrol on 10 October in Darfur, which cost the lives of two soldiers and one police advisor and seriously injured several others.

She commends the work conducted on a daily basis by these soldiers and their key role in protecting civilians and displaced persons in Darfur. The UNAMID personnel killed yesterday had participated honourably in this peace effort, to the point of sacrificing their lives. France extends her condolences to the families of the victims.

France reaffirms her full support for UNAMID’s action to ensure the security of the civilian populations in Darfur. She calls on the Sudanese authorities to shed full light on this lethal attack against a peacekeeping force and to bring an end to the impunity that prevails in this region by bringing the criminals to justice./.
