Israel/construction of new housing in East Jerusalem and freeze on fund transfers to the Palestinian Authority – Statement by the Foreign and European Affairs Ministry Spokesman

Paris, November 2, 2011

France condemns the Israeli authorities’ decision to accelerate the construction of several thousand homes in various settlements in East Jerusalem and its vicinity. France recalls that settlement activity, both in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, is illegal under international law and threatens the two-state solution.

We call upon the Israeli government to refrain from implementing this project and, more generally, to end settlement activity.

France is deeply concerned about the discussions under way within the Israeli government regarding a possible freeze on the transfer of tax revenues collected on behalf of the Palestinian Authority. We call upon the Israeli authorities to continue these payments. Indeed, freezing them would be contrary to the international commitments entered into by Israel and to her legal obligations. Moreover, it would threaten the progress made by the Palestinian Authority in building Palestinian institutions on the ground./.
