Statement by the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs Spokesman

Paris, November 21, 2011

France is deeply concerned by the clashes of the last few days. She condemns the violence that has led to the death of more than 20 demonstrators. She urges everyone to demonstrate a spirit of responsibility during these critical days.

France reaffirms her support for the continuation of the democratic transition in Egypt, which should result in the transfer of power to elected civilian legislative and executive authorities in 2012.

Upholding democratic principles as well as preserving the human rights gains achieved by the Egyptian revolution will allow Egypt to regain stability, restore confidence among economic stakeholders and establish the rule of law in accordance with the aspirations of the Egyptian people.

In this context, the holding of transparent elections on the scheduled dates is vital in order to ensure a successful and orderly democratic transition./.
