Iran/recalling of the French Ambassador for consultations

Statement by the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs Spokesman

Paris, November 30, 2011

France yesterday condemned in the strongest terms the ransacking of the British Embassy in Tehran. Today, the Ministre d’Etat’s Principal Private Secretary summoned the Iranian Chargé d’affaires in Paris to reiterate to him France’s condemnation and remind the Iranian authorities of their obligations.

We expressed our solidarity with the United Kingdom, as the Ministre d’Etat personally reaffirmed to his counterpart, Mr William Hague, this morning.

Given this flagrant and unacceptable violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and the gravity of the violence, the French authorities have decided to recall the French Ambassador from Iran for consultations.

Tomorrow, at the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels, we shall discuss with all our European Union partners how to respond to this new, irresponsible behaviour shown by the Iranian authorities./.
