Brussels, December 8, 2011

Croatia’s European Union accession treaty will be signed on Friday, 9 December on the occasion of the meeting of the EU heads of state and government.

France, who has supported the process of Croatia’s accession to the European Union, welcomes this event, which marks the culmination of six years of intense dialogue and negotiations.

Once it has been put to a referendum in Croatia, then ratified by the 27 member states, this accession will take effect on 1 July 2013. Tomorrow, for the first time, Croatia’s Prime Minister will participate as an observer at the European Council.

While a general election just taken place in Croatia, France welcomes the extensive programme of reforms implemented by the outgoing parliament and government. France also assures the new parliament and the future government, which should soon be appointed, of her desire to continue working with them in order to help them prepare their country for accession.

France also wants to highlight the example Croatia’s accession to the European Union is setting to her neighbouring countries and the constructive, stabilizing role that Croatia must continue to play in the region./.
