Burma/telephone conversation between Nicolas Sarkozy, President of the Republic, and Mrs Aung San Suu Kyi – Communiqué issued by the Presidency of the Republic

Paris, January 13, 2012

President Sarkozy has spoken on the telephone to Mrs Aung San Suu Kyi.

The Head of State paid formal tribute to the political courage Mrs Aung San Suu Kyi has shown working for democracy and freedom in Burma, especially during her many years under house arrest. President Sarkozy announced his decision to award Mrs Aung San Suu Kyi the insignia of Commandeur in the Ordre national de la Légion d’Honneur, in recognition of her exemplary commitment. Alain Juppé, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, will present her with this decoration on his visit to Burma on 15 and 16 January.

President Sarkozy signalled his support for the reform process begun in Burma and underlined France’s very high expectations of the Burmese government, particularly in terms of the essential release of all political prisoners, national reconciliation through dialogue with each minority, and the necessary free and transparent nature of the parliamentary by-election on 1 April 2012. In this respect, the Head of State welcomed the milestone of the prisoner amnesty which the Burmese authorities have just announced./.
