Lebanon/shootings by the Syrian security forces along the maritime border

We condemn the shootings by the Syrian security forces on 21 January, which resulted in the death of a Lebanese minor and injured another Lebanese national along the maritime border between Syria and Lebanon, off the coastal border town of Arida (in northern Lebanon). We also condemn the abuse inflicted by the Syrian forces on a third Lebanese national while he was being held.

We extend our deepest sympathy to the family of the victim, to the authorities and the Lebanese people.

The Syrian authorities must shed full light on the circumstances surrounding the murder of this adolescent.

Syria must respect the integrity, sovereignty, independence and security of Lebanon. We again urge the Syrian authorities to refrain from using violence against civilians. (…)

Sudan/attack against a UNAMID patrol

France utterly condemns the attack against an African Union/United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) patrol which took place on Saturday in Darfur, killing a UNAMID soldier and injuring several others.

She pays tribute to the work carried out on a daily basis by these soldiers and their key role in protecting civilians and displaced persons in Darfur.

France reaffirms her full support for UNAMID’s work to ensure the security of the civilian population in Darfur. She calls on the Sudanese authorities to shed full light on this cowardly attack against a peacekeeping force and to put an end to the impunity that prevails in this region by bringing those responsible for this attack to justice as swiftly as possible./.
