Syria/violence in Hama and Idleb

Statement by the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs Deputy Spokesman

Paris, January 26, 2012

France is deeply concerned about the deterioration of the situation in Hama, where the Syrian regime’s security forces have launched a large-scale offensive.

France utterly condemns the killing of Abd-al-Razzaq Jbeiro, Secretary General of the Syrian Red Crescent and head of its branch in Idleb.
The Syrian authorities have an obligation to ensure the security of humanitarian workers so that they can fulfil their mission and help the civilian population.

Faced with the Syrian regime’s bloody and relentless crackdown, the international community must shoulder its responsibilities by adopting a Security Council resolution condemning in particular the violence perpetrated by the Damascus regime against the Syrian people.

France fully supports all aspects of the Arab League plan to resolve the crisis, including the political component of the plan. We would like a Security Council meeting to take place as swiftly as possible in order to hear the Arab League’s views and bring the international community together in support of its initiative./.
