French Foreign Ministry Launches Twitter Account in Arabic

Published on March 1, 2012
The Foreign Ministry adds Arabic-language tweeting to its activities on Facebook, YouTube, Dailymotion, Flickr, Foursquare and Google+.

The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs has just opened a Twitter account in Arabic, the name of which is @francediplo_AR (twitter.com/francediplo_AR). This strengthens our presence on social network sites where we already have Twitter accounts in French (134,000 followers) and in English, as well as Facebook, YouTube, Dailymotion, Flickr, Foursquare and Google+ accounts.

This new tool will enable us to improve our communication with Arab-speaking audiences and will complement the France Diplomatie website in Arabic as well as the websites of our embassies and consulates in the countries of the region.

Our presence on a social network site that is very popular in Arab countries will allow us to reach out to internet users in order to raise their awareness of the ministry’s action to address major international issues, particularly in the Arab world.

This account will give a new dimension to our overall digital diplomacy strategy, the scope of which the Ministre d’Etat outlined at the most recent Ambassadors’ Conference and which aims to make foreign policy “more accessible” in order to “raise everyone’s awareness of the diversity of its challenges.”
