Letter from Nicolas Sarkozy, President of the Republic, to the President-elect of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin

Paris, March 6, 2012

Dear President-elect,

The day after your election as President of the Russian Federation, I want to offer you my warmest congratulations and my best wishes for Russia and the Russian people.

As you prepare to carry out your country’s highest executive office for the third time, I offer you my most sincere encouragement in continuing the work of democratic and economic modernization to which – in accordance with the wish expressed by the Russian people – you want to dedicate this new mandate.

In line with the centuries-old friendship between France and Russia, our two countries maintain close and mutually beneficial ties. I attach the greatest importance to this partnership and to our dialogue, which must lead to more substantive bilateral relations and to an ever-stronger relationship with the European Union.

Indeed, I am convinced that our two countries must be special partners and are destined to lead the way together to build, in the future, this common economic, human and security space between the EU and Russia, on which our continent’s stability and prosperity will largely depend. In this way – through ever-closer cooperation between our two nations – we shall be able to encourage peace and stability in the world.

(complimentary close)./.
