Paris, March 21, 2012

This summit will be held in Seoul on 26 and 27 March 2012 and bring together heads of state and government from 53 states and the leaders of four international organizations. The Prime Minister will lead the French delegation.

The first summit organized on this subject, in Washington in 2010, raised awareness on the need to enhance nuclear security at global level given the danger of nuclear terrorism. Two years on, the Seoul summit is an opportunity to take stock of the implementation of the commitments and of progress made.

France has begun overhauling her regulations on the physical protection of nuclear materials. In accordance with the guidance issued at the Washington summit, France has successfully registered all French spent radioactive sources worldwide and has begun operations to make them secure, where necessary. France has also been especially active in the areas of research and training, with a view to improving nuclear security at global level.

Furthermore, to ensure an example is set, France asked the International Atomic Energy Agency to assess its nuclear security arrangements in autumn 2011.

These efforts build on those our country carried out in the area of nuclear safety and non-proliferation, in order to promote the responsible development of civilian nuclear applications. (…)./.
