Videoconference between President Sarkozy and President Obama
Paris, April 12, 2012
President Sarkozy and the President of the United States held a videoconference this afternoon to coordinate their approaches to several subjects of strategic importance.
On Syria, the two presidents urged the Syrian regime to respect scrupulously and unconditionally its commitments under the United Nations and Arab League Special Envoy’s plan. The regime will be judged on its actions. In liaison with their – particularly Arab – partners, they agreed to step up their efforts, including at the Security Council, to bring about a definitive end to the brutal crackdown against the Syrian people, ensure emergency humanitarian assistance is provided to them, and ensure they can freely choose their destiny. _ Those responsible for the acts of violence will have to answer for their crimes.
As regards Iran, the two presidents made it clear that they were determined to apply the sanctions with the utmost firmness as long as Tehran refuses to comply with its international obligations, particularly the Security Council resolutions relating to its military nuclear programme. They called on Iran to seize the opportunity presented by the resumption of dialogue with the Six in order to commit to a serious negotiation and suspend all her sensitive nuclear activities./.
