Residence of France, April 19, 2012

Speech by Ambassador François Delattre

On the evening of Wednesday, April 19, the Ambassador of France to the United States, François Delattre, bestowed the Insignia of Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur (Legion of Honor) on businesswoman and philanthropist Susan E. Lehrman.

Mrs. Lehrman received the award, France’s highest honor, in recognition of her role in a broad range of philanthropy activities in the fields of medicine, education and the arts.

In a ceremony at the Ambassador’s Residence in Washington, Amb. Delattre praised Mrs. Lehrman for her "profound understanding of the diplomatic value of culture, and of the lasting impact it can have in forging bonds of friendship between countries with diverse traditions."

As a successful business owner and a veteran of advertising and real estate, Mrs. Lehrman has accomplished a number of important social and educational projects, including the development of the Washington National Opera’s annual ball, as well as supporting the Kid’s Euro Festival, a Washington-based program combining the efforts of each of the European Union’s embassies. The event is the United States’ largest performing arts series for children.

Speaking before a gathering of dignitaries, family and friends, the honoree expressed her belief in the "power and lasting impact that cultural sharing can have in forging bonds of solidarity. [...] I am and will continue to be committed to the expansion and strengthening of international relationships through the language of the arts.”
