Letter from President François Hollande to President Barack Obama

Mr. President,

I was horrified to learn of today’s shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

In these tragic circumstances, I want to express my deep shock and sorrow in the face of this act of unspeakable violence at a primary school that left so many victims.

In this painful moment for the United States, I offer you my heartfelt condolences, both personally and on behalf of the French people.

I would be most grateful to you for kindly conveying my sympathy to the families of the victims of this cruel tragedy.

Statement made by the Minisry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson (Paris, December 14 2012)

We were deeply shocked to learn of the shooting in an elementary school in Connecticut, which,
according to reports that remain provisional, has resulted in the death of almost 30 people,
including a very large number of children.

In these tragic circumstances which have plunged America into mourning, France would like to
express its wholehearted solidarity with the American authorities and people and to extend its
condolences to the families and friends of the victims.
