Cameroon – Kidnapping of Father Vandenbeusch

Published on November 18, 2013
Press briefing by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesman (excerpts)

Paris, November 15, 2013

Q. – Is there any new information?

THE SPOKESMAN – We’re currently doing everything, in coordination with the Cameroonian authorities, to establish the circumstances of the kidnapping, identify the kidnappers and secure Father Vandenbeusch’s release. This work is under way. It requires great discretion in order to be effective. The first hours following a kidnapping are crucial. As the French President said yesterday, we’ll do everything to release our compatriot.

Q. – Is Boko Haram being mentioned as a lead? What’s your assessment?

THE SPOKESMAN – As I speak, we have no certainty about the kidnappers’ identities, motives or demands. We’ll examine every lead in depth, and we’re working tirelessly to shed full light on the facts.

Q. – Apart from the members of the Embassy, are any French gendarmes or soldiers there to investigate?

THE SPOKESMAN – Not to my knowledge. It’s a job that’s being done with the Cameroonian authorities. (…)./.
