United Arab Emirates – World Expo 2020

France welcomes the choice of Dubai to host the World Expo 2020, as announced yesterday by the Bureau International des Expositions, to which very high-quality bids had been submitted.

The Expo, entitled “Connecting minds, creating the future”, will be held from October 2020 to April 2021. For the host country and all the participating countries, it will be a special place for sharing and promoting expertise and excellence.

We extend to the Emirati authorities our congratulations and wishes for success.

Syria

Q. – Tehran and Ankara have called for a ceasefire in Syria before Geneva II is held. Do you support this initiative?

THE SPOKESMAN – France has constantly been calling for a de-escalation in the violence, to enable immediate humanitarian access to the people and put an end to the bloodbath.
Any initiative contributing to this is positive.
Geneva II

Q. – Ahmad Jarba officially announced the SNC’s participation in Geneva II yesterday. A reaction?

THE SPOKESMAN – We welcome what Mr Ahmad Jarba, President of the Syrian National Coalition, said yesterday, announcing the Coalition’s participation in Geneva II. At the meeting organized by France at the United Nations on 26 September 2013, the Coalition voiced, through its president, its desire to work for a political transition in accordance with the Geneva I communiqué.

The constancy of his position reflects his sense of responsibility.

It is now important for the Syrian National Coalition, the Syrian people’s legitimate representative, to work on building an opposition delegation around it. France calls on all opposition groups and the international community to help the Coalition in this task, in order to enable the peace conference to be held on 22 January 2014./.
