France Hosts Summit for Peace and Security in Africa
The Elysée Summit for Peace and Security in Africa is taking place on December 6 and 7 in Paris. After consultation with the invited countries and partners, three themes have been chosen for the summit: peace and security, economic partnership and development, and climate change. Held at the behest of French President François Hollande, the event will demonstrate France’s support for collective African organizations by recognizing their political legitimacy and their primary competency in these issues.
Some 40 Heads of State are confirmed to attend, as are: the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-Moon; the President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy; the President of the European Commission, Manuel Barroso; and the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.
The format of the Summit will feature working sessions between Heads of Delegation at a round table, allowing for exchanges and debate. The African Union and the regional organizations will speak through their Chairpersons.
