Communiqué issued by the Presidency of the Republic

Paris, December 31, 2013

The French President is happy to be able to announce the release of Father Georges Vandenbeusch, who was kidnapped in Cameroon on 13 November.
He thanks all those who worked tirelessly for this outcome, particularly the Cameroonian and Nigerian authorities. He especially thanks President Biya for his personal involvement.

The Head of State has asked Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius to go to Yaoundé to welcome Father Vandenbeusch and bring him back to France as soon as possible.

The President recalls that six French people are still being held hostage in Mali and Syria. He reiterates his support for their families, particularly in this season of festivities, and reaffirms to them his determination to work for their release./.
