Interview given by M. Laurent Fabius, Minister of Foreign Affairs, to RMC/BFMTV (excerpts)

Paris, January 13, 2014

Q. – Is the agreement on the Iranian nuclear programme going to be implemented from 20 January onwards? Can you confirm this?

THE MINISTER – There are two parts to the agreement: one provisional part, as it were, and that’s the one that will be implemented [from 20 January onwards], so that’s very good: the Iranians must take a number of decisions and at the same time we must suspend a few sanctions.

Then there will be the second, complicated part, which will be the discussions on the underlying issue: do the Iranians agree to abandon any military nuclear prospects, or do they simply say, “We’ll remain at threshold level”? We haven’t yet discussed this, and it’s obviously the crucial thing.

But the fact that the agreement we reached – and as you know, France played a large part in it – the fact that the agreement is being implemented is already a good thing./.
