Communiqué issued by the Presidency of the Republic

Paris, March 1, 2014

François Hollande has this evening spoken to Barack Obama, Herman Van Rompuy and Angela Merkel about the serious and worrying situation in Ukraine.

Faced with the risks of an escalation linked to the decision by Russia’s Federation Council to authorize the sending of Russian troops, the President signalled the importance of a common position based on respect for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, support for the Ukrainian government tasked with leading the electoral process, and recognition of the rights of the different communities in Ukraine as well as the ties binding Russia to that country.

The President also spoke to Vladimir Putin. He expressed to him his very deep concern and called on him to avoid all use of force and to seek, with the international community, a solution for overcoming the crisis./.
