I spoke on the telephone today to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
I conveyed to him our concern over the violence in Ukraine, particularly the tragic events in Odessa.
President Putin’s recent statements seem to be a step in the right direction. They are consistent with the high-level contacts between France and Russia.
These prospects must now be translated on the ground. Ending the violence is a matter of urgency, as is a national dialogue including all parties in the run-up to the presidential election of 25 May.
France, which is working intensely with its main partners to seek a political solution, welcomes and supports the efforts made by the Swiss OSCE presidency.
In the coming hours I shall talk to Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk, and on Monday I shall go to Washington, where, along with Secretary of State John Kerry, I shall discuss the situation in Ukraine, among other things./.
