Telephone conversation with Mr. Barack Obama about the situation in Ukraine and the Iraqi crisis

President Hollande spoke this evening with President Obama about the situation in Ukraine and the Iraqi crisis.

With respect to Ukraine, they agreed on the importance of swiftly stabilizing the security situation and bringing an end to the fighting in the eastern part of the country.

They welcomed the fact that President Poroshenko has announced a 14-point peace plan and a week-long unilateral ceasefire.

Within the framework of the negotiations initiated on June 6 between Russia and Ukraine, President Putin must now urgently call on the separatist armed groups to cease their military actions, prevent the transfer of equipment to Ukraine and strengthen Russian-Ukrainian border controls.

The stage would then be set for a de-escalation on the ground and the resumption of negotiations.

In the absence of any progress in that direction, new measures will be adopted against Russia.

With respect to Iraq, François Hollande and Barack Obama emphasized the seriousness of the situation and the need to find a lasting political solution based on a national unity government. They agreed on the importance of working together to achieve that goal.
