Interview given by M. Laurent Fabius, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, to Le Journal du Dimanche

Paris, July 6, 2014

Q. – France has announced measures to step up security on flights bound for the United States. Is there a link with threats of attack related to the phenomenon of European jihadists in Iraq and Syria?

THE MINISTER – The President, the government and I take the risk posed by jihadist networks very seriously. The reinforcement of security measures over the summer period on flights to the United States is an American request that the airlines are going to fulfil. It’s legitimate for vigilance to be stepped up in very busy travel periods.

Let’s bear in mind that the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant [ISIS] separated from al-Qaeda because it regarded it as too soft! In certain videos on the Internet, their fighters can be seen playing football with the severed heads of their victims: they’re barbarians. The plan led by Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve aims to combat the phenomenon without any weakness, from proselytism in France to the jihadistds’ departure and then their potential return here.
