Interview given by M. Jean-Yves Le Drian, Minister of Defence, to the Le Monde newspaper

Paris, July 13, 2014

Q. – A “jihadistan” has appeared in Iraq over the past few weeks. What are the implications of this?

THE MINISTER – The emergence of a terrorist “state” with significant potential resources is a major risk for everyone’s security. It’s a direct consequence of the Syria situation. France’s position is to do everything possible to bring about the establishment of a national unity government to protect Iraq’s identity within its borders. All diplomatic means must be implemented to achieve this solution. Laurent Fabius is playing a very active intermediary role for France. (…)./.
