Statement by M. Laurent Fabius, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development

Paris, August 11, 2014

As I said yesterday on my visit to Baghdad and Erbil, at a time when its sovereignty, unity and integrity are under serious threat, Iraq needs a broad-based government.

We lend our full support to the efforts Iraqi President Fouad Massoum – to whom I spoke yesterday – is making to this end, and we call on all Iraq’s political leaders to engage in dialogue to find a swift political solution acceptable to all the country’s constituent groups.

The process begun at the time of the general election on 30 April 2014 must continue and lead to a political solution which is acceptable to every segment of the Iraqi population and respects everyone’s rights./.
