The President utterly condemns the intolerable atrocities which the Islamic State continues to carry out against the Iraqi people as a whole, and against vulnerable minorities, namely Iraqi Christians and Yazidis.
The international community cannot sit on its hands faced with the threats this terrorist group’s advances pose to the people and to the stability of not only Iraq but the whole region. The Security Council expressed a clear opinion to this effect following the meeting France had asked for as a matter of urgency. It is an important stage.
The President calls for international efforts to be continued and intensified. France intends to pursue this objective at the Security Council so that the conditions are created which allow the international community to provide every assistance and protection necessary for the civilians and displaced people.
The President also welcomes the important decision taken by President Obama to authorize targeted air strikes to counter the Islamic State and to deploy a humanitarian effort; we know how pressing and urgent this is.
France is going to look with the United States and all its partners at what action could be taken to provide jointly all the necessary support to put an end to the civilians’ suffering. It is ready to play its full part in this.
The President calls on the European Union very swiftly to play an active role in this joint effort and put in place all possible means of assistance to address this catastrophic situation. The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development is referring the issue to this effect to Mrs Catherine Ashton, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy./.
