The catastrophic situation the people in Iraqi Kurdistan are facing requires the international community’s mobilization to be continued and extended. France intends to play an active role by providing, in conjunction with its partners and liaising with the new Iraqi authorities, all necessary assistance.
Humanitarian aid has started being delivered in the past few days. This is going to continue. The President has asked the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development personally to keep the matter under review.
In accordance with the content of the discussion on 7 August between President Hollande and President Barzani, France has already been taking the necessary measures for several days in order to support the operational capability of the forces combating the Islamic State. In order to address the urgent needs expressed by the Kurdistan regional authorities, the Head of State has decided, in agreement with Baghdad, to have weapons delivered in the next few hours.
France reiterates its support for the Prime Minister-designate, Mr Haidar al-Abadi, and Iraq’s political leaders, including the President of the Republic and the President of the Parliament. It is essential for a unity government, representing all Iraq’s communities, to be swiftly established to fight effectively against the Islamic State.
Mobilization to help Kurdistan and benefit the whole of Iraq must continue. Coordination of international aid is essential./.
