Fight Against Terrorism in Iraq and Syria
Communiqué issued by the Presidency of the Republic
The French President and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had a telephone conversation and discussed the alarming situation in northern Syria, particularly in the town of Kobane.
They noted their full agreement on the need to give more help to the moderate Syrian opposition fighting both Daesh [ISIL] and the Bashar al-Assad regime. The French President stressed the need to prevent people in northern Syria being massacred. He lent his support to the idea put forward by President Erdoğan of creating a buffer zone between Syria and Turkey to take in and protect displaced people.
Regarding the situation in Iraq, the French President and the Turkish President reiterated their support for the action being conducted by the fighters engaged in the struggle against Daesh. They emphasized that the only lasting solution in Iraq will be political, with the full integration of the Sunni population and its representatives.
