M. Laurent Fabius has today summoned the Indonesian Ambassador to France, H.E. Hotmangaradja Pandjaitan, to express to him the French authorities’ extreme concern regarding the situation of M. Serge Atlaoui, a French national sentenced to death in Indonesia.

While recalling France’s respect for Indonesia’s sovereignty, the Minister expressed France’s opposition to the death penalty everywhere and under all circumstances, and recalled that the situation had been raised several times in recent weeks by the French authorities, including at the highest level. In the framework of the partnership uniting our two countries, he emphasized France’s special vigilance regarding respect for our compatriot’s rights.

M. Atlaoui has lodged an appeal for a review of the trial at the Supreme Court. The French authorities are very committed to ensuring that the examination of this appeal leads to a fair procedure in accordance with the international human rights conventions to which Indonesia is a party. The French government will remain fully mobilized regarding M. Atlaoui’s situation./.
