The French President had a meeting with Olafur Grimsson, President of Iceland, present in France on the occasion of an important geothermal conference. The two presidents expressed the wish for France and Iceland to strengthen further their academic, scientific and economic partnerships, particularly in the energy sector. Geothermal cooperation agreements were signed during President Grimsson’s visit to France.
The Icelandic President assured the French President of his country’s full support for the 2015 Paris Climate Conference. Iceland, whose electricity is produced entirely from renewable energy sources, is affected by [global] warming. President Grimsson indicated that he would back France’s efforts with a view to an ambitious, universal, binding agreement and pass on this message at his international meetings.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to discuss Arctic issues and particularly environmental protection in that ecologically sensitive area.
At President Grimsson’s invitation, the French President will go to Iceland to inaugurate the Arctic Circle international conference, in October 2015./.
