In the current budget situation, the state is duty-bound to set an example and try to ease the financial burden which the organization of COP21 is creating. It is doing so by looking for the most economical solutions and by asking for support from businesses in the form of financial contributions or those in kind. This sponsorship programme is being implemented completely transparently. Corporate sponsors and partners are listed on the COP21 website.
The COP21 Secretariat-General is choosing these sponsors selectively. It has refrained from appealing to certain companies whose area of activity does not reflect the spirit of the conference. It has used objective selection criteria based on the requirements described in the headquarters agreement signed between France and the UN for the organization of COP21, on compliance with the New Economic Regulations Act by the policies of companies applying to be sponsors, on their adherence to the founding principles of the Global Compact regarding environmental responsibility and on their involvement in various international initiatives designed to combat climate change.
The appeal for corporate sponsorship, which has many precedents, is also going to allow us to raise the conference’s level of environmental requirements by enabling it to have the smallest possible carbon footprint (in particular by making available non-polluting vehicles and economical heating technology), promoting recycling and waste treatment and planning environmentally responsible catering. Nevertheless, our partners have always been reminded that becoming a COP21 sponsor does not earn them an eco-label./.
