Paris Climate Conference/“Climate and defense:
Paris, October 14, 2015
The fight against climate disruption is the challenge of this century. France is sparing no effort in mobilizing for COP21 and I welcome this first meeting on the challenges of defence and climate change, bringing together such a large number of ministers and senior representatives from every continent. I see this as a sign of an awareness by the international community which is today being transformed into a desire to act.
I salute all those who have responded to Jean-Yves Le Drian’s appeal – ministers, obviously, but also political figures, experts, researchers and entrepreneurs. Your discussions are essential for thinking about current and future changes in the strategic environment in order to adapt our defence policies, our organizations and our armed forces at every level.
It is clear that climate disruption magnifies the risks of crises at international level. But greater thought must be given to these issues, especially the measures on the contribution by defence ministries to sustainable development policies.
I very much hope an international network on climate and security issues is formed between defence ministries to develop a sound level of cooperation.
This conference will enable us to move towards a safer world. It is our responsibility and our duty./.
