Defense Council on November 5 - Syria/Iraq/Egypt

The French President convened a meeting of the Select Defense Council devoted to the situation in Syria and Iraq.
The Head of State emphasized the importance of supporting the Vienna process in order to make progress towards a political transition, the only solution for resolving the Syria conflict. He recalled that the guiding principles of any agreement must be combating Daesh [ISIL] and stopping the bombing of civilians. Bashar al-Assad can in no way be Syria’s future.
The decision was taken to deploy the the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and its naval strike group to take part in operations against Daesh and its affiliated groups.
The Council examined the state of the terrorist threat against our country and the implementation of the measures necessary to protect our fellow citizens.
The consequences of the Russian plane crash in the Sinai desert on 31 October were also discussed. Every preventive measure has been taken to guarantee the safety of French nationals. Moreover, there are no direct flights between Sharm el-Sheikh and France.
