Statement by M. François Hollande, President of the Republic

Brussels, November 29, 2015

There has to be an agreement which makes it possible to initiate an action plan between Europe and Turkey, so that refugees can be received in Turkey as close to their country of origin as possible, and so that Europe can help Turkey, and that Turkey, too, can make a number of commitments so that there is increased border control.

It’s therefore in everyone’s interest – the interest of the refugees, who must remain as close to their country of origin as possible; the interest of Turkey, which will receive support from Europe; and the interest of Europe, in order not to receive a greater number of refugees than today, because we now know the questions being asked and the issues certain countries have raised.

I therefore want there to be an agreement so that Turkey makes commitments, Europe provides support and the refugees can be received.

Moreover, we must have cooperation with Turkey in order to fight trafficking and take action against terrorism, and there’s a need to do this and also to find a solution in Syria – I’ve come with that in mind too. Thank you./.
