Burkina Faso/Ouagadougou terrorist attack

Statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development Spokesman

Paris, January 18, 2016

According to the latest toll, the attack in Ouagadougou killed 30 people, 20 of whom have been identified. Nationals of Burkina Faso and of several other countries are among the victims, who include two from France and one from Portugal who was residing in France. The attack also injured dozens of people, including three French people.

France reiterates its condolences to the victims’ families and the Burkinabé authorities and people, who have been hit hard by terrorist violence. It expresses its outrage at these barbaric acts and stands at Burkina Faso’s side. These attacks underline the importance of the increasing regional security cooperation between the Sahel countries, in which Burkina Faso is playing its full part.

French national gendarmerie and police teams arrived in Ouagadougou on Sunday morning to support the Burkinabé authorities in the process of identifying the victims. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Development is in contact with the victims’ families.

We ask the French community and visiting French people to continue carefully following the safety recommendations issued by our embassy and the local authorities./.
