Paris, January 16, 2016

I welcome the fact that the nuclear agreement with Iran has begun to be fully implemented. Now that the IAEA has verified that Iran has carried out the measures to dismantle its nuclear programme provided for in the agreement of 14 July 2015, the main economic and financial sanctions have been lifted. This is a milestone for peace and security, and for international efforts to combat nuclear proliferation.

Through its stance of constructive firmness, France significantly contributed to the conclusion of this agreement; it will be vigilant in ensuring it is strictly observed and is implemented.

At a time when the region is facing tremendous challenges and strong tensions, I hope that the spirit of cooperation which was the hallmark of the agreement’s conclusion may be reflected in every other regional issue as well./.
